Ashok Chakra is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra. It is the highest peacetime bravery award for showing the most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice other than in the face of the enemy.
Ashok Chakra was established by the Government of India in 1952. The first recipient was Flight Lieutenant Suhas Biswas (1952).
This award is not exclusively for the military. Ashok Chakra may also be awarded to civilians.

Award composition: A circular gold gilt medal on a 32 mm dark green ribbon with a 2 mm central saffron stripe.
