Perennial Rivers in India

In India only ten rivers are perennial in nature. This means that these rivers maintain significant flow of water throughout the year. Here is a complete list of perennial Indian rivers:

Brahmaputra (Perennial River)
Rises from Bhagirath Glacier, Manasarovar in Himalayas and flows for a total length of 2900 km. It passes through the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam before emptying in the Ganges river in Ganges Delta. While most rivers on the Indian subcontinent have female names, this river has a rare male name. It is the ninth largest river in the world by discharge, and the 15th longest. In India, it flows for 916 km. Before entering Assam, this river is called Yarlung Tsangpo. In Bangladesh, it is called Jamuna.
Ganges (Perennial River)
Rises from Gangotri glacier in Uttarakhand, India and flows for a total length of 2525 km. It passes through the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal before emptying in the Bay of Bengal in Ganges Delta. After entering Bangladesh, Ganges is called Padma river.
Ghaggar (Perennial River)
Rises from Dagshai village, Shivalik Hills in Himachal Pradesh and flows for a total length of 320 km. It passes through the states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan before emptying in the Ottu in Haryana. After Ottu barrage, Ghaggar is called Hakra river. Hakra is a dried-out channel of a river near Fort Abbas City in Pakistan that is the continuation of the Ghaggar River in India. Ghaggar river flows only during the monsoon season. Since the 19th century, proposals have been made to identify the mythological Sarasvati river with the Ghaggar-Hakra river.
Indus (Perennial River)
Rises from S ngg Zangbo in Tibetan Plateau and flows for a total length of 3180 km. It passes through the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Tibet before emptying in the Arabian Sea in Indus River Delta.
Mahanadi (Perennial River)
Rises from Sihawa, Dhamtari in Dandakaranya, Chhattisgarh and flows for a total length of 850 km. It passes through the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha before emptying in the False Point in Jagatsinghpur, Odisha.
Narmada (Perennial River)
Rises from Narmada Kund in Amarkantak, Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh and flows for a total length of 1312 km. It passes through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat before emptying in the Gulf of Khambhat (Arabian Sea) in Bharuch, Gujarat.
Sutlej (Perennial River)
Rises from Langq n Zangbo in Tibet and flows for a total length of 1500 km. It passes through the states of Tibet, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bahawalpur district and Punjab before emptying in the Chenab river in Bahawalpur district, Punjab, Pakistan.
Tapti (Perennial River)
Rises from Multai in Betul, Madhya Pradesh and flows for a total length of 724 km. It passes through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat before emptying in the Gulf of Khambhat (Arabian Sea) in Dumas, Surat, Gujarat.
Thamirabarani (Perennial River)
Rises from Agastyarkoodam peak of Pothigai hills in Western Ghats and flows for a total length of 128 km. It passes through the states of Tamil Nadu before emptying in the Gulf of Mannar in . Thamirabarani is the only perennial river in South India.
Yamuna (Perennial River)
Rises from Yamunotri in Banderpooch peaks, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India and flows for a total length of 1376 km. It passes through the states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi before emptying in the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj (Allahabad), India.
