  1. United Nations was established on 24 October 1945
  2. The UN was established to replace the League Of Nations — a UN-like international organization that existed before but failed in preventing war.
  3. 51 countries were the founder members of the United Nations.
  4. Trygve Lie, a Norwegian, was the first elected Secretary-General of the United Nations.
  5. India‘s representative V.K. Krishna Menon delivered the longest speech in the history of the UN. He defended India’s position on Kashmir in an eight hours long speech in the UN Security Council on 23-24 January 1957.
  6. Five permanent and veto holding countries in the Security Council are: France, China, Russia, United Kingdom and United States. These five nations are often refer to as P5 nations.
  7. The UN headquarters are located at First Avenue 750 in New York City.
  8. American financier and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. had purchased the land for the UN Headquarters.
  9. The area of UN Headquarters is considered to be the extraterritorial land.
  10. United Nations has also won an Oscar! In 1947, the UN short film ‘First Steps’ won the Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject.

  1. The UN identifies Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish as its six official languages.

  6. South Sudan became the 193rd member of the UN in 2011.
  7. The Vatican has never applied for full membership of the UN. It is an observer of the United Nations.
  8. UN Peacekeeping Force has 110,000 soldiers. 123 countries provide soldiers/police persons to the Peacekeeping Force.
  9. United Nations and the then Secretary-General Kofi Annan jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.
  10. Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the UN, is the only person to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize posthumously.
  11. The UN provides food to 91 million people and vaccinations for 58% of the world’s children.
  12. Oliver Lincoln Lundquist designed the United Nations logo.
  13. Indonesia is the only nation that once withdrew from the membership of the United Nations. Indonesia withdrew in 1965 only to rejoin the UN a year later.
